I would have to say our aging system is actually quite simple, read thoroughly so you can know if you have to age your dog! If it is not your age category you do not have to read it.
New Born Pups: If you choose to be this young then you must be expecting to grow up slowly! These pups have to go through Born-1 year before they can stop growing. You can change your characters age by a week more every week, but if you buy a potion in the shop you can grow up faster. Make sure to actually act like a puppy that's your age.
Parents of these pups: While your pups are aging you can just skip your age up by two years slowly or fast, which ever you choose.
10 months-1 year: You are still pups and can grow up faster without using potions but only by 2-3 weeks every week. So if you still want to hurry and reach 1 year then go ahead and by a potion!
Parents Of these pups: Since they are still the same pups they still only have to up there age by 2 years and no more if they don't want too.
1 year- 2 years: Now that you are 1 year old you can age up to 2+ years at anytime that you want. (Of course unless you have pups.)
Remember- If you have pups you must go up age by 2 years and if your pups have pups you have to go up by 2 years again!
Dogs are usually adults by 2 years and elders by 10 years old for ex-small to small dogs, for medium to large they're elders at 8 years old and ex-large dogs are elders at 6 years old.
